John Wheeler aka Barley Scotch- Stories and (a few) songs from the mind of Hayseed Dixie

Glee Club 7.30pm
John Wheeler, better known as the frontman, mouthpiece, and populist philosopher of cult American rockgrass band Hayseed Dixie, presents an evening of songs and the generally sordid stories behind them.” Wheeler’s pontifications and songs inspired by personal experiences and observations of all things social and political are utterly individual, rarely “politically correct” and generally hilarious. Call it spoken word with songs. According to Wheeler, “Nine years of continuous traveling with a band like Hayseed Dixie makes for a lot of very strange encounters with people and situations. I’ve come to believe that only the truth is truly funny. I definitely could have never dreamed most of this stuff up.” Said encounters include conversations with international arms dealers, would-be terrorists, swingers, bidet-fearful rednecks and wanna-be left-wing and right-wing activists, as well as musings on condom advertisements, religion, politics, and food. Hayseed Dixie initially sprang to cult fame and an equal combination of critical acclaim and critical disdain primarily on the strength of their inimitable bluegrass reinterpretations of standards from the hard rock canon. However, over the course of 7 albums and 9 years of constant global touring, many of their original songs have proved as popular and enduring. Wheeler will tell the extended stories behind these songs and preach The Gospel According To John Wheeler on all subjects most of us have the good sense not to bring up in conversation. You’ve heard Hayseed Dixie – now meet the man behind the band_________________________

Davey Arthur -Close To Solo Tour

Little Civic 7.30pm
Born in Donegal, Davey Arthur began playing music at the age of eight and is one of Ireland's most successful artists, who has thrilled and moved audiences all over the world with his spirit, soul and expertise. He has over 40 compositions to his credit - many of which have been recorded or covered by some of the biggest names in Irish music today. Davey found success in 1979 when The Furey Brothers and Davey Arthur became one of the biggest folk acts ever to come out of Ireland with a string of hits which was only starting with the release of international chart-toppers The Green Fields Of France and When You Were Sweet Sixteen.. In 1992, Davey left the Fureys to pursue a solo career and to work with many of the musicians he admires. Band members are chosen from a pool of Irish traditional talent and have included Mike Galvin and Tadhg Twomey. Davey Arthur has been recognised by his peers as one of Ireland's brightest and most enduring musical exports - and is admired amongst his fellows for the matchless skill with which he plays his chosen instruments... most especially the tenor banjo. In 1999 Davey was honoured with a place in the Irish Music Hall of Fame in Dublin, alongside such other illustrious artists as U2, Sinead O'Connor, The Corrs, The Chieftains, Da Dannan and Clannad. It was an accolade many considered to have been long overdue. He has guested on numerous television programmes, including The Late, Late Show, and has also been acclaimed as a raconteur - reflecting the rare gift for storytelling so evident in many of his compositions._________________________

Justin Townes Earle + support

Glee Club 7.30pm
With Justin Townes Earle’s pedigree come mixed blessings. As the son of legendary singer/songwriter Steve Earle, high expectations are the name of the game, and he’s shown that he is up to the task on The Good Life, crafting stark portraits and narrative tales with elements of blues, classic country and rock n’roll. A modern-day troubadour, Earle blends genres seamlessly, framing his songs in warm musical settings and creating tunes that could easily be mistaken for classics. “I started out to make an old timey country record, but I listen to so many other kinds of music,” Justin explained. “Some of the songs were rearranged on the spot and took on other lives and album is now more of an exploration of southern music.” Earle approaches universal topics like traveling and matters of the heart (“Hard Living”, “The Good Life”) with the same fervor with which he evokes the bleak loneliness of a Civil War soldier on “Lone Pine Hill”. With inspirations as diverse as Townes Van Zandt (he was named in honor of the elder Earle’s hero), Jimmy Reed, Kurt Cobain, The Replacements, Ray Charles and The Pogues, Justin forged his own brand of American roots music. Going through life with a namesake of Van Zandt’s stature cannot be easy for a young songwriter, but Earle takes it in stride,” saying, “Anyone who tries to live up to Van Zandt is a fool. I’m honored to carry the name, but if I spent my life trying to live up to it, I’d have a pretty miserable life.” Likewise, his father’s incredibly acclaimed, prolific career casts a huge shadow, but Justin Townes Earles makes a name for himself by focusing his writing on the personal rather than the political, narrative tales instead of protest. The Good Life melds the qualities of a short story with the lyrical acuity of excellent songs, celebrating grand southern traditions and blowing a fresh breeze across the musical gardens and dive bars of Nashville._________________________

The Strawbs

Little Civic 7.30pm
Constantly touring and recording for the last 40 years The Strawbs present a twice yearly tour with an acoustic line-up - Dave Cousins on guitar, dulcimer, banjo and vocals, Dave Lambert on guitar and vocals, plus 70’s band member Chas Cronk on guitar, bass and vocals. They sound better than ever. The Strawbs have enjoyed major success on both sides of the Atlantic. In the early 1970s, as well as the hit albums such as “Grave New World” their hit singles “Part of the Union” and “Lay Down” topped the charts. From the mid-1970s they spent more time in the States and Canada where their albums charted for five years as they toured, among others, with Santana, The Eagles, Peter Frampton, Blue Oyster Cult, Joe Walsh, King Crimson, and Frank Zappa. This tour promotes their brand new studio album “The Broken Hearted Bride” which contains many new and wonderful songs from the master songwriter Dave Cousins. The band will be playing these new songs along with classic Strawbs songs performed with the integrity and musicianship for which the band has been always been recognised. “Carefully selecting their repertoire from less than obvious sources they invest the rarely performed material with considerable energy and thoughtful arrangements.”(Record Collector) www.strawbsweb.co.uk_________________________
