About World Unlimited
World Unlimited is a voluntary, not for profit, organisation formed in 1989 to bring the best in International roots artists to Birmingham. We held six events that year and it is from that humble beginning that the organisation has grown to over one hundred shows per year. Our aim is to present, via live performances, the best musicians from cultures worldwide as well as UK based musicians including a focus on local artists from the West Midlands. We explore and present traditional roots and contemporary new musics developed and inspired from traditional sources.
We endeavour to make performances open to all, reflecting the cosmopolitan mix of Birmingham and the West Midlands. Particular emphasis is placed on working with young people and educational development without losing sight of the historical role our elders have always played in relating the social role of music. Our pricing policy will always aim to reflect the needs of all sectors of society.
World Unlimited has gained a reputation as one of the leading national promoters from musicians, agencies and audiences alike and aims to further develop these skills in the furtherance of bringing top International artists to an even wider audience. We aim to range presentations, to challenge stereotypes, and to reach out to people who do not attend events in the more conventionally structured performance spaces. This initiative is allied to the continuing search for suitable venues in areas that are under-represented on the performance map.
Education
Education / workshop provision is a further development area. We are currently sponsored by npower for a community workshop series that has seen presentations from Bollywood Brass Band, Baka Beyond, Moussa Kouyate, Nana Tsiboe, ESP, Hot Nights In Rio, Kathryn Roberts etc.
